Grounding your kids after receiving low grades at school.... is it a good idea?

Parenting is still a trial and error thing for me. I have three kids, a girl and two boys. My eldest is in first year high school, my second – a Grade 6 student, and my youngest in Grade 4. I married early at the age of 20 and until now I don't really know if my ways of enforcing discipline to my kids are the right ones. But when you see them socialize with other kids and then you see the other kids seem a bit of a bully , I always thought to myself that my kids are well behaved than the other kids. Maybe my ways are the right ones.

But when it comes to their studies, sometimes I feel guilty when I ground them for having low grades. Some say that it's not a good idea, even harsh for the kids because they need encouragements not punishments so that they will do their best the next time. Ever since my kids went to school from pre-school until now, I set some rules regarding their study periods.
